Hard to be inspired by Obamacare and the lackluster performance of our government. Global warming and the polar vortex has some possibilities for story ideas. The Winter Olympics this year is a case in point. Every night we were warned by the news outlets about a possible terrorist threat. It is the grist for a fantastic novel, but so far nothing has happened. I wonder how many Americans avoided attending out of fear. How many athletes spent sleepless nights wondering when and if an attack would come? Clearly the threat of an attack had a profound effect and the terrorists are probably jubilant.

I have to admit. I’m a news junkie. I need my daily fix and would undoubtably go through some sort of remission if I were marooned on a deserted island. Since becoming a writer, I’ve frequently used current events to inspire me. I think splicing in something that really happened into a story can give it more realism, and sets the timeline. It also helps if the newsworthy item is a hot topic and therefore relevant and interesting. Terrorism and new scientific developments are hot topics in the Action/Adventure genre. The Internet has opened up a cornucopia for authors as a resourse. I’m writing about Somali Pirates at the moment. I know much more than I ever did after reading news reports and the like. I’m glad we live in a time where we don’t have to travel to far off and to decidedly hazardous locals in order to immerse ourselves into a topic, and be seen as an expert on the subject. At the same time, an author should choose carefully the current event. Unless new blood is injected into the story in the form of a fresh slant, it may come off as merely rehashing old news, that is, after changing the names to protect the innocent. I don’t read many science fiction books. Just a preference. At the same time I like to watch sci-fi movies and TV shows. I love the fact that many things we take for granted, originaly came from the imagination of writers. Space travel of course, submarines, cell phones, computers, Internet, GPS, Voice activated devices, robots. And now we hear of cars that drive themselves and have crash avoidance abilities. Airplanes have been using auto pilot for years. Pilots have forgotten how to manually fly passenger jets. We have a remote controlled robot roaming Mars and a spaceship has traveled outside our universe. Some day we may travel at warp speeds. We have weaponized drones deployed in the mddle east. All of these far fetched ideas were first proposed in science fiction novels and films. CAT scans and MRI machines look similar to the medical bays onboard the Star Trek Enterprise. I live up in the mountains, and the small hospital I go to has a telesite robot connected to a live doctor in LA. It seems so strange to sit in front of a robot and tell him my symptoms and get a remote diagnosis. Before long they might develope tricorders, like on Star Trek. Imagine what the world would be like if we have flying cars, transporters and time machines. I never thought I’d see the day when I could make a live face to face telephone call to my son in Afganistan. It bogels the imagination of us old timers who were around before TV.

I've been working on finishing and editing my new novel. I think the working title above has a good ring to it. The synopsis is also a work in progress, but goes like this.

Identical twin brothers, eighteen years since being born in war torn Somalia, are reunited at last. One brother, raised in an orphanage was shanghaied by bandits and held captive for ransom along with two BBC reporters. The other brother, raised in America by wealthy adopted parents, rushes to Somalia and tries to blend in so that he might help to rescue his brother. The pirates capture him as well and they must work together to stay alive long enough to escape. They're pressed into service to join a rag tag band of modern day pirates. Their target booty, a cruise liner. What they don't know is that onboard is their worst nightmare. A wounded war veteran called Blade and his new bride are honeymooning. The pirates manage to hijack the cruise ship and begin to negotiate a ransom. But fate intervenes, as a rogue wave comes out of nowhere, threatening to capsize the vessel, while Blade sneaks around and picks off the pirates one by one. This is an action packed adventure, and the whole militia team is back from the first novel in the series, End Game, to help rescue Blade, the twins and the rest of the two thousand hostages from Somali pirates and from uncontrollable fits of nature in the most dangerous waters on earth.

If you haven’t already, meet Madison Knight, the chocolate-loving detective, who is determined to solve murder and find justice for the victims—even if that means coming into contact with the sight of blood.

However, in Found Innocent, the latest release in the series (releasing October 16th!), she doesn’t have to face too messy of a crime scene, at least in one sense. What she does have to deal with is whether or not she’s willing to jeopardize departmental relationships and cross the wall of blue.

Here, this is what it’s about:

There's one code when it comes to the wall of blue…and Madison Knight may have to cross it.

Any good cop knows you never report a brother for mishandling a case or accuse him of misconduct, but in order to find justice, Madison may not have a choice.

Lacy Rose had one goal for her twentieth birthday—to be found innocent of past sins—but her life is cut short.

When Lacy's remains are found in a garden and the investigation becomes connected to a closed case, Madison must face her past. The lead detective on that case was Madison's ex-fiancé. At the risk of jeopardizing departmental relationships, and churning up the attention of an old flame at the same time, Madison must push hard before the guilty are found innocent.

Excerpt, Chapter 1:

“He didn’t do it!”
The hysterical shouting pulled Madison’s attention from her monitor to a woman rushing toward her.
The station was supposed to be quiet today. Sunday. She wasn’t required to be there, and that made it the perfect day to dig into her cold case. She was so close to getting answers.
With one more longing look at her screen, Madison rose from her chair and held up her hands to stop the woman.
“Detective Knight.” She stated this as if they had met before.
Officer Ranson, the female officer who manned the front desk, came up behind them. “Come on—”
Another officer brushed past Ranson and slipped his hands under the woman’s arms. “Let’s go.”
He pulled on her, but she stayed still. Her eyes steadied on Madison.
“Please help me.” She attempted to shake loose from the officer’s grip.
Her frown lines were deep burrows, her eyes were sunken, and the flesh around them was puffy. She appeared to be rough-edged, but there was something desperate about her, and she didn’t seem to be a threat to the lives of anyone here.
“I’ve got this,” Madison said.
“All right, your call.” The male officer let go of the woman, and he and Ranson left.
“I saw your face in the paper.” The woman held up the Stiles Times. “It’s you, isn’t it?” Her lashes were caked with mascara, and she blinked slowly. Madison wondered if the cosmetic had sealed her eyes shut.
Madison passed a glance to the paper. It captured a moment she wished to forget. A day when she had been forced to speak in front of a crowd and to take pride in the job she had done. The thing was, though, a good cop couldn’t care less about the recognition.
The woman sobbed, yet her tears didn’t affect her makeup. “He wouldn’t do this…”
Madison summoned patience. A list of envelope-printing companies—which could prove to be a vital link in the chain of evidence against the Russians—would be on her monitor, right now.
She took a deep breath, passed another glance to her computer, and turned back to the woman. “Come with me.”
Madison kept the woman to the side of her. Her first impression was the woman didn’t pose a threat, but she still wasn’t willing to sacrifice her back by leading the way into the room.
Inside, Madison gestured to a chair.
The woman dropped her red bag heavily on the table. It was large enough to serve as a duffel bag. She pulled off her jean jacket, folded it over the back of the chair, and revealed a pink sweater that displayed more cleavage than Madison could ever hope to see on herself. The woman went rooting through the duffel bag and she stuffed a stick of gum in her mouth. She worked at chopping it into a soft, pliable distraction. It snapped in her mouth.
“Let’s start with your name—”
“Vilma with an ‘i’. Vilma Thorne, well, it would have been. My God, Kev!” She raised her face upward as if calling out to a Greater Being. Her gum chewing paused only momentarily.
“Vilma—” Madison had to tune out the noise and the display of her open-mouth chewing. “Let’s start at the beginning. Why are you here?”
Vilma stuck a finger through one of the large gold hoops dangling from her ears and leaned in.
Madison detected the blend of cheap perfume and cigarettes. Maybe—she inhaled deeper, trying not to appear obvious—it wasn’t perfume but whiskey. It was hard to discern. Her eyes appeared normal, except for the abuse of eye makeup. Besides the thick mascara, her lids were weighed with the color purple. Her pupils weren’t dilated or pinpricks.
Still, she didn’t respond to Madison’s question.
“Okay, Vilma, if you need my help, I need you to talk to me.”
Possibly this woman was on a new line of drug that disguised itself behind brilliant colors? Maybe this was a mistake and Madison should have let her get hauled away.
“My family is against what he did. But he didn’t do it!” Her voice rose, tears flowed. She stopped chewing and, sniffling, went rooting in the duffel bag again. She came out with a bunched up tissue and wiped her nose.
Madison’s tolerance level had almost reached its limit. “You keep saying he didn’t do it. Do what?”
A tissue still pinched on the tip of her nose, Vilma said, “He didn’t kill himself…someone killed him.”

Carolyn Arnold started to take writing seriously six plus years ago when a co-worker said “tell me a story”. Since then she’s written nine novels and has plans to write many more. She has a love for the canine world and has two beagles that are affectionately named Max and Chelsea. Like her female protagonist Madison Knight, she loves her chocolate and has been known, on occasion, to speak her mind.
Chapter 1

The tow rope snapped taut and the street luge began to roll down the runway at ever increasing speeds. The hard scrabble tarmac was littered with small bits of scree and loose gravel and the surface was not entirely level. Lying supine, the luge driver hung on with all his might as his modified skate board jounced and swerved out of control. It was like he was on a giant roller-skate which juked to the right and then the left. He had no sure way to steer it. He could only lean to the side to keep on course. He wore a black leather coat and pants which might help prevent some road rash should he accidentally crash or roll off. He was held fast to the board by a strip of velcro, which secured him like glue to prevent him from bouncing off into the darkness of the night.
A tow rope was connected to the underside of a cargo jet which was slowly taxiing out in preparation for takeoff. It was just after midnight and the small airport was pitch black except for the blinking runway lights. Nobody had witnessed his preparations of hooking an elastic tow rope secured with a quick release mechanism. Security is lax at these small town airports. The luge driver has only to push a button to be released from the tow rope and the other end would automatically detach as well. The rope would fly off and fall away after unhooking. It was like the set up that towed gliders planes utilize.
This is his first attempt to do this, and Brad's resolve to carry out this ultimate extreme jump was beginning to wane. He wasn't afraid. He had base jumped off buildings, cliffs, bridges, radio towers, even a hot air balloon, but this was the ultimate test of his wing suit. His friends called him the bird man. Now they may have to refer to him as the rocket man if he lives to tell about it. His actions are being filmed via a helmet cam, and a GPS monitor will prove the speed and height of assent and dissent. Recently, another base jumper had plummeted from outer space after leaping off the platform of a weather balloon.
Brad was a full time student at a local Junior College, but no job, and he was relatively poor. He had no sponsors yet, only a growing fan base who'd followed his every death defying jump on his YouTube site. Maybe after this jump, his video would go viral and he will get the sponsors he needed. Then he'll have the financial backing to travel all over the world, and thus be able to leap off the top of the tallest mountains. And hopefully, he'd soon be able to jump from helicopters so he won't have to climb those mountains.
He had spent all the money he'd possessed to purchase the wing-suit. His suit is a prototype and its designer would want to know how it held up to this rigorous test. It's made of very light yet strong synthetic material. The same stuff they use to make hot air balloons. He won't be jumping from the edge of outer space tonight, but so far nobody has ever been towed by a cargo jet and released for a free-fall at cruising altitude.
His audible altimeter would alert him if he was approaching the altitude where he would need portable oxygen to survive. He didn't have any real safety equipment. No insulated pressure suit or oxygen respirator. He was literally going commando. A few brave souls have done high altitude low opening jumps before. Mostly military skydivers performed similar 30,000 foot HALO maneuvers after jumping from a jets fuselage hatch, but they had the luxury of using proper safety equipment.
Red circles marked the location of the twin jet engine's before him. He gritted his teeth as the cargo jet began to lift off and he felt a sudden tug as he was jerked upward. He saw the ground rush away beneath. He kept his head high and his goggles almost flew off his face from the sudden draught, which could be dangerous, as his eyeballs can burst from their sockets. He felt the gravitational pull increase exponentially, and he glimpsed the lights of the city glittering far below. The tow rope was long enough to prevent him from being caught up in the fierce turbulence of the relative wind and forward speed of the turbine engines. He was dangling 30 feet or so from it's tail section. The pilots had no idea they had a hitchhiker.
In a few moments he would be free falling, like a flying squirrel. He would simply spread his wings, the webbing between his arms and his torso and between his legs would slow his dissent and give him the lift to overcome the drag. He would soon be soaring at over 200 mph. Terminal Velocity. He would be gliding at incredible speeds. He only has to dip his shoulder in order to turn and then he can circle the city below like an eagle coasting on thermals.
The thrust of the forward speed of the climbing jet was approaching hundreds of mph and he fought to hold on and keep his street luge trimmed in the jet-wash. The temperature was rapidly dropping to freezing, and his goggles were becoming caked with ice crystals. His whole body began to quake and shiver as hypothermia kicked in. He carried a hook knife attached to his ankle by velcro should he have to cut himself free.
His arms felt heavy, and he wondered if he would have the necessary strength to overcome the gravitational pull. He wasn't sure how many G's he is pulling right now, but it felt like he had an elephant sitting on his chest. Once free of the tow rope, he only had to lean forward a bit to be released from the velcro covered luge. Like the tow rope, it would cast off and fall to the ground. Currently the jet's flight path was over the desert so he didn't worry about someone below getting hit by falling debris. He hoped he could locate everything later on.
The moment he plummeted to a safe altitude he'd release his chute and simply glide back to earth. He hoped he'd be able to land close to town. He planed to use his cell phone to call a friend to pick him up.
He felt the speed slow a little-the aircraft's approaching cruising speed-and he prepared to hit the release button. Just as his altimeter alarm began to squawk he noticed a bright light. It was as if someone had turned on a klieg light directly in front of him. He pushed the release button and leaned forward to disengage himself from the street luge. He felt himself tumbling forward into the slipstream. He heard a roar and saw the cargo jet peel off into the night. He wasn't falling yet and he felt weightless for a moment. He pictured himself like a cartoon character hanging in mid-air before falling off a cliff. His stomach threatened to heave and he swallowed hard. He was glad it was empty.
He gulped air and suddenly realized he was having trouble getting a breath. The oxygen was quite thin up here. He felt as if he were about to black out. He watched the tow rope and the luge fall away and disappear into the inky blackness. He peered down and saw the city lights twinkling like sequins far below. With the stars shining all around, it was becoming difficult to tell if he was looking up or looking down. He was becoming dizzy and disoriented. Oxygen starvation. He held his breath and simply tumbled and fell directly into the maw of the shimmering light. He didn't have the strength to stretch out prostrate in free fall to slow his dissent. He didn't attempt to spread his arms and legs of his wing-suit. He didn't pull his emergency chute. Abruptly he lost consciousness and the light faded to black like an iris of an eye closing.Regge Ridgwayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13496938203092973538noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8104255655289502401.post-58285823363337688402013-08-14T08:41:00.000-07:002013-08-14T09:44:24.593-07:00New Release: Life Sentence, Romantic Suspense by @Carolyn_Arnold

New Release: Life Sentence, Romantic Suspense by @Carolyn_Arnold

"If I pay with my life, you will pay with yours."

Defense Attorney Bryan Lexan may have just taken on the case which will cost him his life. When his client, a Russian mafia boss, is convicted of first-degree murder, he vows to make Bryan pay.

Meanwhile, Jessica Pratt has always prided herself on being a modern woman–you know, the kind who doesn't need a man to make her feel complete. So when she finds herself torn between two, she realizes that not all decisions are based on facts. If they were, her boyfriend, Bryan, would be the logical choice. He has the family name, wealth, and a stake in a successful law firm. Only thing is, when she meets Mason Freeman, the chemistry between them is irrefutable and he won't take no for an answer.
With both of them caught up in a struggle for survival, and a powerful enemy on their heels, they'll need to decide where their loyalties lie.

What reviewers are saying:

“Carolyn Arnold...continues the trend of writing exciting stories that keep your attention throughout...Life Sentence is a thriller all the way...Arnold never disappoints.”
—Barb, The Reading Cafe

“Though unique in her own right, author Carolyn Arnold is a masterful blend of such greats as Shirley Jackson (horror), Joseph Finder (thrills), and Janet Evanovich (humor and romance). Life Sentence is powerful and gripping, with so many twists and turns it left me gasping...”
—Betty Dravis, Award-winning Author and Journalist

CAROLYN ARNOLD’s writing career was born when a co-worker said “tell me a story”. From there what had started off as a few paragraphs grew into her first length novel—LIFE SENTENCE. Her writing has been compared to New York Times Bestsellers such as JD Robb, Mary Higgins Clark, Sue Grafton, Michael Connelly, Tess Gerritsen, and more. She is the author of the best-selling Madison Knight series, and Brandon Fisher FBI series. Carolyn was born in 1976 in Picton, Ontario but currently lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband and two beagles.
I've been working for the better part of a year on Endgame and finally am able to release it to the public. It's already garnered a 5* review. Happy dance. Now comes the hard part. Promoting it. I need reviewers folks. I promise you won't regret reading this one. It has everything. My MC called Blade, is a wounded war veteran with blades for legs who is suffering from PTSD. He has Mixed Martial Arts skills which come in handy when confronted by some of the most diabolical terrorists around. After joining up with a suicidal doctor called Butcher, who has nothing left to live for and a broken band of other wounded warriors, all hell breaks loose. A sleeper cell of foreign terrorists want to destroy LA with a coordinated series of attacks. The authorities are looking the other way and ignore Blade's warnings. If they don't do something to stop the terrorists, then who will. They are joined by a ragtag group of militia mercenaries who have been stockpiling weapons and train daily for just such a battle. The action will leave you breathless and on the edge of your seat. Please check this out. The buy link is to the right of this post.
I have found a publisher for Moon Shadow and have changed the cover to make it appear more intriguing. The re-release coincides with the debut of Endgame. So if you haven't had a chance to read it please take a look. The new cover and buy link is to the right of the post.
Thanks to all my fans who are also my friends for helping me on this journey to become a best selling author.
I haven't posted for a while on here. No excuses for bad behavior, except for the usual. I"m lazy. I recently traveled to Yosemite and San Diego for mini vacations. I also worked in Hollywood on a few TV shows as a background actor. This was fun and educational and the experience has given me a new desire to write a script. My daughter Jessica, who loves all things Zombie, has agreed to collaborate on the project. She can give me the young person's perspective as I am decidedly OLD SCHOOL. Stay tuned as this project coalesces from concept to reality. I have been editing my WIP with Grammarly.com. I heartily recommend using this online program as it helps with so many writing issues. Its been a long time since I studied grammar, and I am humbled by all of the great help this program gives. Authors can't only rely on spell check and the way we think things should be. I recently changed the title of my WIP from Butcher and Blade to Endgame. I think it is more appropriate and the new title might have better appeal to readers. I also am shopping it around for an agent. The rejections are piling up and the negative feedback has severely dampened my enthusiasm. Looking for Beta-Readers as well, including reviewers. I lost my publisher for Moon Shadow when they went out of business, and I am searching for another one. Many rejections and the lack of responses is underwhelming. My only novel which is presently for sale is In The Midnight Hour. It is currently being ignored or invisible on Amazon. Or both for that matter. A direct hit on a writer's ego. My next writing project is a follow up novel to Moon Shadow. I plan to send one of my MC's to the Antarctic to wrestle with a new villain bent on evil doings. I have plotted most of it out in my mind and even wrote the first chapter. I have to say that being a writer and doing what we do is the best experience in the world. It can be all consuming and alienate one from their family and friends, but the whole process is so rewarding that it is worth it. I'll sign off for now with a promise to blog more often.Regge Ridgwayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13496938203092973538noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8104255655289502401.post-53734231500199340222013-03-12T09:56:00.000-07:002013-03-12T09:56:28.908-07:00Been a Blog Slacker LatelyApologies for my ignoring my blog of late. I have been remise My writing and editing schedule is grueling and I have precious little time left in the day. Not enough hours in the day if you add in all the family responsibilities. My grandson broke his leg last week when a protective mother cow trampled him when he got too close to her newborn calf. He has a cast all the way up to his hip. He is doing good now and just had a birthday with all his school mates coming over. Guardian angel looking over him as we all know how bad it could have been. My other grandson is a hero for being there to scare off the cow at his own perile and herding her back to a pen. Whew. Sometimes it seems harder being a grandparent then it was being a parent.

I finished Butcher and Blade finally. I really like writing in this new genre. Action/ Thriller and hope I can garner some new fans because of this transition. I put some medical scenes in it so hope my Medical Thriller fans will also be satisfied. Now I am trying to publish the old fasion way, sending out queries to agents and publishers. I am already getting a slew of rejections and this is both humbling and discouraging. Trying to get published is not for the weak of heart. You have to shrug off all the rejections and stand on the backs of so many famous writers who tell of mountains of rejections before being discovered.

I did get a request to read the manuscript from one of the big 5 publishers. I have never got this close before so am excited beyond all measure. I hope they like it as they print hardback versions first and send out to libraries and bookstores. Eventually they will put it out as a paperback and ebook and even offer it on Audible.com. It may be the real deal for me and this new novel. Keeping my fingers crossed and the whole experience has definately ratcheted up my attitude for being a writer.

I am also going to Hollywood once or twice a month to be a background actor. This is so much fun and a wonderful diversion for me. It is harder to do then it appears. The hours are long. I had to wait 7 hours before I even got on set ysterday. Once, on another show I arrived on set at 10 AM and was released at close to midnight. Add in the 3 hour drive each way and you do the math. Exhausted and thrilled at the opportunity. Acting has always been one of the items on my Bucket List. Check off this one. Skydiving? Scuba Diving? Have to work on that.

I have reached 40000 on my WIP called Butcher and Blade and am currently working on the query letter.

This is what I have so far for my query/synopsis. If it resonates with anyone or sucks please let me know.

"Butcher and Blade" is the title of my new action/adventure thriller. This is an approximately 80,000 word fictional account of what can happen in a world where foreign terrorists continue to wage a war against all nations who do not follow their Islamic religion and teachings in the Quoran. Two damaged strangers with divergent backgrounds become unlikely friends and heroes, when by chance they are thrown together. They have to fight for their own lives while trying to prevent a 9-11 type of terrorist attack in LA.

Synopsis

Unpredictable fate occurs when a prominent physician, Dr, Butcher, depressed and suicidal over the recent death of his wife, drives home along a deserted stretch of a LA freeway. A thief throws out a bag full of money from the roof of a moving armored vehicle during a hijacking. Accomplices following along in a van, watch helplessly as the scene unfolds. A homeless man, a wounded gulf war veteran nicknamed Blade, attempts to retrieve the bag, and is accidentally struck by Dr. Butcher's car. The gang attempts to take these two eye-witnesses out to the desert, kill them, and get rid of the evidence. But they don't realize their hostages have certain survival skills. Butcher and Blade manage to defeat their assassins, abscond with the get-away-van, and squirrel away the stolen money. But they are hunted down relentlessly by the surviving members of this ruthless gang. And due to a misconception and a series of unforeseen circumstances, find themselves unable to go to the authorities for help.

When the gang attempts to recapture them, a fierce gun battle ensues in the parking lot of a flea bag motel the fugitives are holed up in. The gang needs Dr. Butcher's surgical skills to patch up their wounded leader, while at the same time interrogating Blade to force him to give up the location of their loot. Blade, a decorated Iraqi war veteran and a double amputee, uses his sharp leg prosthesis and mixed-martial-arts skills to overcome his captors, escape, and single handedly attempt a hostage rescue. This story takes an unexpected twist when the gang reveals themselves to be a sleeper cell of al-Qaeda terrorists. They are bent on avenging the death of Osama bin Ladin, and creating large scale havoc in LA on this day, which is the 10th anniversary of 9-11.

The two fugitives discover the terrorist's plot, and attempt to thwart their deadly plans. Unable to get help from the local authorities, they enlist unlikely assistance from some PTSD hampered wounded war veteran friends and a band of highly motivated paramilitary-survivalists. The team has an advantage over the unsuspecting terrorists who mistakingly believe they killed Butcher and Blade in an IED explosion. The two manage to escape the explosion without injury, but not before getting a glimpse of a tattoo on the back of the leader of the terrorists. He brags about the attacks while under sedation and is delirious from an infection while recovering from surgery after being shot. The tattoo showed much of Los Angeles in ruins. It pictured theme parks, busted dams, fallen skyscrapers and radiation spilling from damaged nuclear reactors. They attempt to alert the authorities about the plot, but their claims are met with skepticism and ignored.

Unknown to them, the director of the joint task force against terrorism knows full well about the potential threat, but is choosing to look the other way and allow the terrorists to succeed in order to achieve his own political gains. The team realize they are on their own and have to rely on limited resources and their own military skills in order to prevent disaster and the loss of thousands of lives.

This is a high-octane tale with non-stop action, and introduces two refreshing new heroes and a divers cast of fallible yet likable characters who have disabilities.

No I don't think I am like Johnny Depp who played in the great movie portrayal of Hunter S Thompson. I never have even seen the movie, Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas, but someday I think I will. I do have fear of peers however, and their loathing. I take umbrage sometimes to reviewers who were not there in the fox hole with me as I spent countless hours on my novel only to dismiss my work with a snarky remark and only give it a few reluctant stars on Amazon.com.

I have been on this new journey in my life for about a month now. I have not been working in my day job due to a neck injury which has kept me in a haze of pain pills and booze. So Hunter, my writer brother watching down from writer's heaven; I think I am beginning to feel your pain. I also have not been able to earn my comfortable six figure income and am relying on savings and my dear wife to bring home the bacon. She works as a nurse and comes home with stories of this and that. Mostly I tune her out except for the story she told the other day of how a rattlesnake managed to get through the automatic doors and terrorized the nurses at work. One intrepid nurse grabbed a pillow case and a stick and prodded the hissing monster into the sac and put it outside to slither away. Shudder. I hate snakes.
The spiders and snakes are a cause for concern around this mountain community above Lake Isabella, and lately I have been feeling the stare of a possible mountain lion stalking me as I go on walks in the hills around my house. The dogs have been acting a bit spooked of late, and yesterday they stood stock still, like pointers, silently gazing at the same spot for an uncomfortable minute or two. Then I heard or else my imagination conjured up a squalling sound like I have heard mountain lions make in movies and commercials. I don't carry a weapon on these walks and now am reconsidering this lack of preparidness. I did see a dead mountain lion by the side of the road nearby. It most likely was struck by a car and when I drove by the same spot later, it was gone. Heebeejeebies.
This neck injury setback has actually allowed me to pursue my life long dream of becomming a writer and so I sit here writing, while wearing a neck brace. I am getting into a morning routine now. Coffee and social networking to get my eyes less bleary and brain cells working properly and clear the cob webs. Then a little editing on my work in progress which I am writting by the seat of my pants. I still am not sure how the story will end. Lol. Not to worry. I usually write like this. It makes it more interesting for me. Like some malevolent entity is lurking inside my body and using me to write their stories. He he. Like in THe Dark Half. Thanks for planting that in my head Stephen King.
I am picking up a bit of steam now and learning to ignore the distractions in my life. The television stays off. I even have decided music is a distraction as I tend to want to sing along. ScarryOkie style. I am working towards a thousand word a day quota. It takes me about 2 to 3 hours to get up there and at this pace I might see a couple of novels done per year. Dreamer. In The Midnight Hour is a dark and chilling medical thriller sure to keep you up at night. I especially liked the beginning; Ridgway knows how to get you hooked fast. Like romance? It's got some of that. Like creepy characters? Sure. Like to keep your dictionary close by? You'll have to if you aren't in a medical field. Thank goodness for the Kindle dictionary.

My only complaint is the overuse of adjectives. If he'd chopped out most of the words that end with "ly" it would've been an easier and more enjoyable read. It's a pet peeve of mine; other readers may not even notice.

Keep up the good work, Mr. Ridgway!

I REALLY LIKED THIS THRILLER. IT GRABS YOU FROM THE FIRST CHAPTER AND DOESN'T LET UP. THERE IS JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF MEDICAL SCENES WHICH I LIKE, AS I AM A FAN OF SHOWS LIKE GRAYS ANATOMY. THE DETAIL IS AMAZING AND THE CHARACTERS ARE WELL WRITTEN AND EASY TO RELATE TO. THERE IS A GREAT LOVE STORY WHICH HELPED BALANCE THE INTENSE DRAMA AND HORROR. THE MAIN CHARACTER IS A PHYSICIAN WHO HAS GONE MAD AFTER THE DEATH OF HIS WIFE AND HE IS SEEKING REVENGE FOR THOSE WHO RUINED HIS LIFE AND CAREER. I RECOMMEND THIS NOVEL FOR ANYONE LOOKING FOR A MEDICAL THRILLER RIVALING THOSE WRITTEN BY ROBIN COOK OR MICHAEL CRICHTON.

I enjoyed reading this and couldn't put it down. It does have a lot of heart and I really loved the characters. Even the antagonist, Dr. Anderson, is easy to understand his motive for escape and then to get revenge on the people who changed his life. There is much tension in the scenes that made me want to cringe and yell out. "Look Out" and "Don't Go In There". The story takes place in a huge hospital at night where it is mostly deserted and there are many hiding places for the killer to jump out of. It sent chills down my spine. The killer can move about at will and has knowledge of his surroundings because he used to work there. He knows where his victims go at night and can get there without being discovered is spite of the fact he is wearing a hospital gown and should be up in ICU in a coma. I don't want to give anything away but there is a wonderful love story between the two protagonists who find themselves in hot water when the creepy administrator tries to cover up the killings by saying they were accidental. This kind of reminded me of the Phantom of The Opera without the great music. This is a must read if you are a thriller fan. There is some medical jargon which makes it more real and the medical scenes make it authentic like the show Grays Anatomy. Get this novel and read it. It will make you want to scream with horror and delight.

Great read. I could hardly put the thing down when the action started. The two main characters are trying to escape the clutches of a madman who is in charge of a quarantine in the deepest wilderness of Alaska. If the bears and the wolves don't get you, the raging waters of a river might. Lots of Survival scenes that will leave you breathless with vivid scenery and well written characters. I liked the love story building as the two young people run for their life. And the cliff-hangers will leave you on the edge of your seat. The mad scientist comes after them with a fully armed helicopter, and they have now weapons and can only use their wits and shear good fortune to survive. The cave scene was tense and made me a bit claustrophobic. The river scene made me cry. There is a red Irish Setter who will steal scene after scene and will also steal your heart. All this while a mysterious virus is running amok and threatening the world with annihilation. This is a page turner. I read it in a couple of sittings and will probably read it again for the detail is so good you want to see if you missed something.Regge Ridgwayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13496938203092973538noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8104255655289502401.post-9834277386944454062012-09-23T13:01:00.001-07:002012-09-23T13:01:34.916-07:005****review today for Moon Shadow

THIS WAS A PLEASANT SURPRISE. THE CHARACTERS AND SCENERY WERE WELL WRITTEN AND PUT ME RIGHT THERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ACTION. I WAS ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT MOST OF THE TIME AND COULD NOT PUT THE NOVEL DOWN. THE SURVIVAL SCENES WERE VIVID AND AWE INSPIRING. IT MADE ME THINK OF CALL OF THE WILD WITH ALL THE INTERACTION WITH WOLVES, BEARS AND EVEN A MOOSE. THE RIVER SCENES WERE THE BEST AND I HAD TO READ THROUGH IT TWICE DUE TO ALL OF THE ACTION. THERE WAS A CONFLICT WITH THE MILITARY AND LOTS OF ACTION WITH HELICOPTERS AND MISSILES. I DIDN'T WANT TO MISS A THING AND YOU WON'T EITHER IF YOU PICK THIS NOVEL TO READ. CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHAT THIS AUTHOR DOES NEXT. EACH NOVEL HE WRITES GETS BETTER AND BETTER.

We work very hard to tell a story which means a lot to us and is relevant in today's world. We want so much to tell the story but instead they sit languishing on the shelf. It is pathetic and no wonder so many talented authors are giving up and moving on to quicker ways to earn a living. I was so excited to have two novels up for sale this year. Published ones, which means I was selected out of many other hopefuls and didn't have to go the Self Published route. I have done what was recommended, Blogged, used twitter and goodreads and Facebook relentlessly to tell everyone about my wonderful stories, and in spite of having thousands of friends on those sites, only managed to get some of them into the hands of a couple of friends and close family. I spend hundreds of dollars for editing, cover art, promotion. Now I am getting them both out in paper back, I have a chance to do book signings. This could also turn out to be a complete waste of time. I do see many success stories out there and know the potential is there but with so much competition out there, in some ways the odds are the same as winning the lottery. Thanks for letting me vent today. I won't do it again for awhile, I just needed to center and remember I am living a dream of being a published writer and I am driven to keep at it even if I leave this world with 10 or 12 published novels just sitting on the shelf. At least I tried.

My Guilty Pleasure

It is an honor to interview Richard Bard, author of Brainrush and Brainrush II on Characters Well Met. He is one of the most interesting and innovative authors around today. He has been compared to authors of high tech thrillers like Michael Crichton and Brad Thor . His novels are critically acclaimed and achieved a meteoric climb to hover in the top of the best seller rankings. His genre is a hybrid of action/ adventure combined with mystery/thriller and a hint of sci-fi. He has a legion of devoted fans. I have been a fan since reading an excerpt for Brainrush when we were both semi-finalists for the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards. I was hooked even back then and was glad to see him independently publish it shortly thereafter. Now he has earned a coveted three book deal with a publisher and even has representation. There are whispers around Hollywood and talk of a potential blockbuster movie franchise being bandied around.
I gave both novels 5 star reviews on Amazon and was not alone in my appraisal. I thoroughly enjoyed reading both and highly recommend them and eagerly await the next two sequels. I like the high octane non-stop action and the high tech infused unpredictable scenes. From the beginning the reader will find themselves drawn in and compelled to find out what is going to happen next. The cover should come with a warning label. May cause heart palpitations and might cause dizziness and raise blood pressure.
I found the characters are well drawn and interesting and are easy to be invested in. The MC, Jake Bronson, is affable and has a great sense of humor. I also like him for his love of family above all else, and that those close to him are worthy of personal sacrifice, and for his belief that life is precious. This might stem from his being diagnosed with a terminal illness while serving as a combat pilot for the Air Force. During a intense claustrophobic scene we find Jake in an MRI machine when an earthquake strikes. When he recovers he finds he now has astounding cognitive powers. He has telekinesis and can move things and control people with his mind. He also has telepathy and his brain is a sponge absorbing information like a super computer with a photographic memory. He has increased stamina, agility and strength. Unfortunately his illness is still in remission and he gets weak when forced to use his powers.
There is an evil mastermind terrorist, Luciano Battista, who is bent on destroying America and Jake is pitted against the mad man's unlimited resources and his vast organization. The action in both novels takes us on world wide trips from the beaches of sunny California to the gondolas in Venice Italy and the casinos of Monti Carlo, and the caves of Afghanistan to the rain forests of Venezuela. The scenes are extremely vivid and the author makes you feel like you are right there in the midst of the action.
There is a love interest when a beautiful psychologist comes into his life, Francesca, who also has cognitive abilities like Jake. Together they face impossible odds in life threatening situations in scene after scene of nail biting cliff hangers. There is also something malevolent in the two novels that will make lovers of sci-fi novels happy, when a humanity threatening plot curve arises and our MC has the only key to our salvation.
Now I have the pleasure to introduce the gifted story teller Richard Bard. He is an author's author, a literary rock star, and reading his books is a guilty pleasure. His life seems to imitate art as he himself was an Air Force Combat Pilot and is a cancer survivor just like his MC Jake. He doesn't have super powers, but he is a superb writer. He has a degree from Notre Dame, ran three successful security consulting companies, and has a reputation in the industry world wide. He has indeed traveled the world, and lived in Venice Italy while researching the novels. He also researched the "Rainman" like abilities of autism for the novels and has an interest in finding a cure. This may come from his love of a genius father struck down in his prime with Alzheimer's disease.

Reggie: Welcome, Richard. To get us started why don’t you tell us a little about your chosen genre and your book.
I’ve always been fascinated by people with extraordinary mental abilities. I heard about photographic memory and I thought, “Why can’t I do that?”
I was astounded to learn that there are a growing number of cases where ordinary people suffer a head injury and then immediately develop incredible mental abilities—like photographic memory, math skills, or artistic talents. Doesn’t that mean those “gifts” lie dormant in all of us just waiting to be unlocked? When I discovered that scientists are developing ways to tap into those abilities organically, the concept grabbed hold of my imagination. What would it be like to be “gifted” with the flip of a switch? And what would happen if the wrong people grabbed hold of that technology? Sounded like a great action-thriller to me. Brainrush was born.

Reggie: What is your inspiration?
I’ve been an avid reader and movie-goer most of my life. So stories have been my constant companion. The natural result was a very active imagination and a unique perspective on what works and what doesn’t, at least for me as a reader or viewer. When I create a story, I fashion it into something that I would personally enjoy. That means it better be a page turner.

Reggie: How would you describe what you’re writing right now using only five words?
More twists than a corkscrew.

Reggie: I love reading the warnings on the blurbs for many books. If you could write a warning label for yourself as a person or an author, what would it say?
Warning! Contents may be habit forming.

Reggie: Do you have any guilty pleasures?
Buttered popcorn and video games.

Reggie: Name one thing readers would be surprised to know about you.
I turned down an appointment to Air Force Academy in favor of a scholarship to the University of Notre Dame. Why? Because ND was within driving distance of my home—and I didn’t want to give up seeing my high school girlfriend on the weekends. PS. We broke up the week before school started.

Reggie: Do you have any writing rituals that you must do before you sit down to write?
Right now I’m sitting in my favorite coffee shop by the beach. It’s an eclectic spot with wall-to-wall bookshelves packed to the brim with books—all available on an honor basis. I do much of my writing here. Sometimes, one of the ‘regulars’ even saves my favorite table for me.

Reggie:What is the working title of your next book? What’s it about?
“Brainrush-III, Final Judgment”. It’s scheduled for release in June of 2013. While each book in the series is a “stand-alone”, the story carries on in each sequel. Without giving away any secrets, I can tell you that Book-3 sweeps from Venice, Italy, to Geneva, Switzerland, and finally to a remote island in the Banda Sea. Also, as in the first two books, autistic children play key roles in the story.

Reggie: Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
I’m thrilled about my new relationship with Thomas & Mercer, the mystery & thriller imprint of Amazon Publishing. I signed a 3-Book deal with them for the Brainrush series. It would make sense to continue working with them on Book-4 of the series. On the agent front, I’m lucky to be represented by superstars. My literary agent is Scott Miller, EVP of Trident Media Group. My film agent Jon Cassir of Creative Artists Agency (CAA).

Reggie: What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
It’s difficult to recommend specific titles since Brainrush crosses genres as both a mystery/thriller and action/adventure. However, many readers have said that my story-telling style is similar to Michael Crichton. I’m humbled by the comparison. He was always one of my favorites.

Reggie: You are a cancer survivor and today you are a best-selling author. What is your outlook about second chances?
When you learn that your days are numbered, everything changes. Things that seemed so important—like money or success—suddenly don’t matter anymore. Life becomes all about love, family, and forgiveness. But you don’t have to face death in order to embrace life. You simply have to decide to make a change, not just for your own sake, but for those around you. We all have second chances. Third, fourth and fifth chances, too. It’s never too late to live strong.
Reggie: What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
If the opinion of other readers matters, here are a few quick facts that might convince you to download a free sample:
Publishers Weekly called it “A terrifically entertaining thriller”
“Brainrush, a Thriller” (Book One) was listed in the Wall Street Journal as the #1 Bestselling Action/Adventure in their "Readers Guide to Self-Published Big Sellers" (Dec 9, 2011). With over 600 reviews it has an average 4.5 Stars.
The sequel, "BRAINRUSH-II, The Enemy of My Enemy", was released in December of 2011 to rave reviews. Within a few weeks it became the #1 Top-Rated (best reviewed) Action/Adventure and the #2 Top-Rated Mystery/Thriller on Amazon. Nine months later—with over 320 reviews and an average 4.8 Stars—it still holds those spots (as of September 18, 2012).
I LOVED this, it's a dazzler! One of my favorite reads in ages. A killer stalking the halls of a hospital? Terrifying! Also fast paced with accurate medical details. I've read where the author works in the medical field and it certainly shows. This book hooks you from the first page and you will not want to put it down. I also loved the budding love story between the two protagonists, and found myself staying up reading well past bedtime. I highly recommend In The Midnight Hour for anyone who is seeking an unusual, ingenious new medical thriller. Don't miss it!

A decent medical thriller for a debut. At times it has a fast paced tension, horror-feel to it. The remorselessness of the killer in the beginning is haunting. There was a bit of not being in the villain's direct POV though with words like "he noticed" and "he realized". However, this mad man is not mad - but quite intelligent -and we fall for his madness a bit - which makes it even more chilling.

Ridgway's cast of characters are good mix which notches up the interesting aspect of the tale. I would have preferred more dialogue to increase the tension vs. the long narrative in the book. Also at times the story was slowed down by too much medical detail and the backstory of each character which all could have been weaved in with a deft hand in shorter bits throughout the book. But you do feel as if this author really knows his medical stuff and why the story is so entrenched with it making it quite believable - and I enjoyed the graphic detail. Overall a decent read.

This is an excellent mystery thriller. The characters are well-defined and the story is continuously keeping you on edge. Mr. Ridgway's extensive knowledge of the medical profession is also on display in this novel. This is a highly recommended book.

It reminded me a little of Outbreak, with the sleazy suit and a fanatical Military officer. I did have a little trouble getting into the book, as the first chapter took off a slow, but once I got into it, I had a hard time putting it down. I say that Mister Ridgway has a hit on his hands.

I give Moon Shadow 4 out of 5 Stars.

Kenneth Hoss

Author of the Internationally Bestselling Kelli Storm Series
Storm Rising - A Kelli Storm Novel
Storm Warning - A Kelli Storm Novel (Kelli Storm Series)Regge Ridgwayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13496938203092973538noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8104255655289502401.post-58741298589831964212012-09-16T09:17:00.003-07:002012-09-16T09:17:46.711-07:00Butcher and BladeButcher and Blade is the working title for my next WIP. I am shifting my writing style a bit to a parallel genre ACTION THRILLERs. This revealed itself to me as I have been reading books Like BrainRush and some other high octane novels. I like the non-stop and in your face style of writing. There is little room for character development or even scene descriptions. If you stop to talk about the sunset, you might lose your audience. So if you are into this style of writing I invite you to read a rough draft of my first chapter in the Page section ablove.
Butcher and Blade is a story of the unlikely pairing of two drastically different men who are literally thrown together. Dr. Butcher is a surgeon who on the night he goes home to commit suicide in the wake of his beloved wife's untimely death, runs over Blade, a homeless person living under an freeway overpass. Blade is the nickname of a wounded veteran and has blades for legs lost durring an IED explosion in Afghanistan. This chance meeting is further complicated as they are in the crossfire of a big rig highjacking robbery and end up being kidnapped along with a bag of loot. They narrowly escape and find themselves on the run after hiding the robbers money. The story ramps up as the real reason for the robbers attack becomes more apparent. Hold on dear reader. This is going to be a very bumpy Ride.
